Commissioned by Iniva (Institute of International Visual Arts), Simone delivered 7 weeks of workshops at a school in Castleford, with creative engagement producer Boseda Olawoye and art therapist Will Jones, to explore how museums and galleries don’t always represent the lives, passions and interests of local young people.
The group asked:
- What kind of work is shown in galleries and museums?
- Who gets to make that work?
- Who gets to call themselves an artist?
- Why do working class artists need to be seen and heard?
The result was ‘You Can’t Ignore Us’, an exhibition and supporting zine titled by the young people. The exhibition was left as a legacy within the school and the publication is available from the Stuart Hall Library in London. You can view the zine below.
